STIMULI IN PLANTS (TROPISMS):

LABORATORY PPRACTICE STIMULI IN LIVING THINGS

OBJECTIVES

·         Recognize the way in that living things respond to different stimuli.
·         Identify the different stimuli that cause responses in plants.
·         Analyze how living things react to their surroundings.

 MATERIALS AND REAGENTS

·         Laboratory coat
·         Gloves
·         Earthworms (2 or 3)
·         Lantern
·         Forceps
·         Paper towel
·         Blindfold
·         Vinegar (hazards and cautions)
·         Magnifying glass
·         Pea seed geminated
·         Flowers seeds
·         Little flowerpot
·         Black plastic bag (middle size)

PROCEDURE:

A.    ANATOMY AND STIMULI OF THE WORM
1.     Take an earthworm and put it on a wet paper.
2.     With the magnifying glass try to find the setae (little structures like bristles to locomotion in worms). If you don’t know it, please, read before practice about it.
3.     Take carefully the earthworm with the forceps or your fingers and pick up from the paper. Repeat at least three times.
4.     Point the lantern directly to the earthworm’s body and watch its behavior.
5.     Add a drop of vinegar to the earthworm’s surroundings. Look its reaction.

B.    STIMULI IN HUMANS
1.     Cover your eyes with the blindfold.
2.     Your classmate touches with a pencil and register the results.
3.     Repeat the process but with your classmate eyes-covered.
4.     Take note of each response.

C.    PLANTING THE SEEDS
1.     Select one or two pea seeds per group and put them into the flowerpot.
2.     For each group, planting process indication will be given by teacher, follow them and register the results every day during a week.

SYNTHESIS PROJECT JOURNAL
Dear students:
At the synthesis project journal you should describe the characteristics of the stimuli in plants (tropisms). Make a cover page and do this project in white sheets by computer.

Complete a chart with the following data:

Week
Control plant size (photo)
Treatment plant size (photo)
Observed tropism
General observations
The analysis and conclusions of the topic must be the explanation of why the plants grow or not grow according to the variables given.

Second Term topics:

FIRST COMPREHENSION GOAL:

UNIT I. ATOMIC STRUCTURE AND PERIODIC TRENDS.
1. Atom’s periodic properties
2. Nuclear chemistry
3. Electronic Configuration
4. Spectral notation and quantum numbers
